How to fight FGM through education and raise awareness of the harmful practice.
Launching of Somalia’s first female genital mutilation (FGM) written in somali
The intention of this conference and the publication of the book was to increase knowledge about the practice and start the debate about whose responsibility it is to end this deadly practice. FGM is and has been a very long and horrible practice in Somalia. FGM is practiced in parts of Somalia despite the fact that the world has recognized the practice as a violation of human rights.
Poverty and illiteracy is a big challenge in Somalia, and ordinary people on their own can change little, therefore the Somali government must take responsibility for this. And that is what we hope to influence and contribute towards through this book launch and conference. We have invited two of Somalia’s education ministers, Abdullah Godah Barre, minister of education, culture and higher education and Abdullahi Mohamed, minister of education of Puntland, to Oslo together with State Secretary Aksel Jakobsen, Researcher Ragnhild Elise Johansen and the author of the book Ubah Aden – to discuss how we can increase people’s knowledge of this practice through the education system in Somalia. And how we can hold the authorities accountable for this work.
